Mission and Core Values
Through its educational programs, Alexandra Beller/Dances seeks to be a landing spot for artists in transitional phases- whether just out of undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate educational programs, tenured professors wishing to find fresh life in their practices, or artists craving support in their choreographic or creative process. Creating educational environments that connect intergenerational students at every stage of their journey, AB/D seeks to spark conversations through intersections of dance, movement, text, theater, pedagogy and somatics. Our teaching style is grounded in empathy, action, fact, and science, with room for instinct and personal response, inviting students to explore what a sense of authenticity means for them in their work and lives.
Empathy is the cornerstone of the company’s philosophy. This means sensing ourselves, rejecting assumptions, questioning our inheritance, especially around identity, and battling intolerance from multiple angles. We believe in holistic, student-centered, somatic education that creates a consensual playground for self-challenge, new ideas, and profound transformations. We are committed to honesty, listening, learning on both ends of the teaching relationship, and adaptation.
